CHARACTER BACKSTORY
Mary was the fifth child of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York and the youngest to survive infancy. She was born at Richmond Palace on March 18th in 1496 and died on June 25th in 1533. She and her brother, Henry, were close when they were children. In fact, he named his daughter, the future Queen Mary I, after her. The warship Mary Rose was also named in her honour.
Mary was betrothed to her first husband, King Louis of France in 1514, but when he died of natural causes within a few months of marriage, she married Charles Brandon, the Duke of Suffolk. Even after her second marriage, Mary was normally referred to at the English Court as 'the French Queen', and was not known as 'the Duchess of Suffolk' in her lifetime, probably to remind her that she had married below her rank. Mary spent most of her time at the Duke's country seat of Westhorpe Hall in Suffolk. Mary opposed her brother's attempts to annul his marriage to Katherine of Aragon, who was her friend and disliked Anne Boleyn due to this. This caused relations between herself and her brother to be strained.
GENTILITY
Sister of Henry, Arthur and Margaret Tudor, and also the daughter of Elizabeth of York and Henry Vll.
POSITION
Princess, later Queen of France, and finally Duchess of Suffolk.
PERSONALITY TYPE
She was known as the feisty sister, who always stood her ground, and wasn't afraid to speak up if she disagreed with someone, even if it was her brother.
SIGNATURE LOOK
Like most of her siblings, Mary is known for her light features, her red hair, pale skin, and bright eyes. She is described by Erasmus as "Nature never formed anything more beautiful", by the Venetian Ambassador as "a Paradise — tall, slender, grey-eyed, possessing an extreme pallor", and finally by Historian Hester Chapman as "She wore her glorious silken red-gold hair flowing loose to her waist".
ENDEARING TRAITS
She was verociously determined.
ANNOYING TRAITS
She had a changeable nature, was also known to be whiny and spoilt.
