Lady Agnes of Northleach arrived at the Bavarian court to be the Queen's lady after she lost both her parents and her loved one within three weeks because of the sweating sickness, also her two siblings didn’t want her in their homes. She is much younger than her sister Julia and her brother Anthony, so they never head a close relationship. Agnes really loved her parents though, her father was a poor earl, who had more books and music instruments than money.
So she left England and stepped into the Bavarian Queen's service, where she soon found a lifelong friend ;Henriette and soon after Cordelia. Agnes always supported Henriette, which meant her some difficulties for her by the Queen. As she always took her friends side in quarrels.
Soon, when the court visited Linderhof castle, she met Mark Smeaton, the musician, who music brought back the music in Agnes’ life what she thought is lost forever after her father’s death. Mark became Agnes’s violin teacher and he had the nerves to endure her horrible playing at the beginning. They soon became good friends, always teasing each other.
They arrived in England together to the Percy wedding. In England something changed between Mark and Agnes, they felt that there is more behind the constant teasing and jokes. But both of them hide their new feelings, as both of them were in other relationships. Agnes soon returned to Bavaria, and left Mark behind in England. During the year apart she realized the extent of her feelings for Mark, ended her another relationship, despite the fact that she believed she will never see Mark again. In the meantime she met Daniel Francis who always behaved with her like an overprotective brother.
But one day Mark returned and after a very clumsy and funny incident with a trunk and a shirt they could not denied their feelings further and became a couple.
Soon they left Bavaria and returned to England, where Agnes helped by Henriette's labor and was beside her friend all along while she had the fights with the King.
Agnes met one of Mark’s friends; Gregory Cromwell, who soon became her very good friend too.
Agnes and Mark were happy together despite their difference in age and social status and Mark’s constant worries, that he is not good enough for Agnes.
As Mark wanted to stay at court, Agnes found an occupation too and became the governess of Victoria, Mary Talbot’s daughter. But she had to leave the court soon as Mary was banished and had to move to Northumberland with her daughter and Agnes followed them. Mary, Vicky and Gregory were great friends and support in that two years which Mark had to spend in Flanders with his ill mother. But their love survived time and distance, and became even stronger .
Agnes even learned to accept Mark’s fears of marriage and having children because of his very bad childhood experiences.
Soon however their relationship was tested, when she realized she is pregnant with Mark’s baby. She left the court and fled to Hedingham, to her friend Cordelia. she was afraid. How mark will react? she didn’t want to force him into anything. And she hated the thought Mark would feel trapped. But soon Mark followed her and she confessed the truth, Mark didn’t run away. He said however scared he was now, he loves Agnes and wants this baby. So they returned to court together, although they keep the pregnancy a secret, and none of them is sure yet how they feel about this baby and what the future will bring.
