Name: Gregory Cromwell
Born: 1514 in Putney, Surrey
Age: 18 (circa 1532)
Eye Color: Blue-green
Hair Color and Style: Short dark hair, no curls
Father: Thomas Cromwell
Mother: Elizabeth Wykes
Siblings: Three sisters, Grace and Anne, they died during the Sweating Sickness and Liliana, daughter of Henriette de Longwy
Relative: Henriette de Longwy (stepmother), Catherine (Cromwell) Williams and Elizabeth Cromwell, sisters of Thomas Cromwell and Richard Williams, Thomas Cromwell's nephew
Religion: Protestant (not Lutheran)
Graduation: Cambridge University
Personality: Gregory was always a reserved and quiet boy and most people said he comes more after his mother than his father. For he always had a friendly and helpful nature, also he was very clever, even if he didn't like Latin.
Of course, as a young boy he drove his father into madness with his actions and one could say he was a typical young boy who loved the life.
But then the family suffered a blow of fate as Gregory's mother and sisters (Anne and Grace) died, that hit not only Gregory's father hard. In that time, his personality changed rapidly. He became more serious, more withdrawn and now resembled his father. Although he kept his delicate facial features as well as his compassionate nature in general, he was no longer the boy he once was. Gregory mused about everything and everyone, And because of the fact, that he was most of the time alone in his room and read books, he needed now more time to make friends. But when he had friends, he flourished for a period of time before he sank in his thoughts when he was alone again.
Even if his father had the feeling sometimes that he would lose him more and more, it was not so. Gregory loved his father about everything, he were the only one he had.
He was very vulnerable when it came to his family or friends, but also he could be very strong and if someone spoke ill about the persons he loved he was like his father in every way.
Friends: Richard Williams, his cousin, Tian Duchess of Kenford, Mary Talbot, Thomas Wyatt, Mark Smeaton and Agnes of Northleach
Later career: Lawyer
Wife: Elizabeth Seymour (will marry her 1534), sister of Jane, Edward and Thomas Seymour
Children: Henry, Catherine, Francis, Edward and Thomas
Gregory Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell of Oakham (c. 1514 – 4 July 1551) was born in Putney, Surrey, the son of Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex, and Elizabeth Wykes.
He was tutored by Richard Southwell and attended the University of Cambridge. In 1539 Gregory was summoned to parliament as a peer of the realm, and the title of Baron Cromwell, previously held by his father, instead of being lost by attainder, was granted to the young man by patent on 18 December following his father's execution.
1537 he married Elizabeth Seymour, the sister of Jane Seymour (and thereby the aunt of Edward VI). She was daughter of Sir John Seymour, and widow of Sir Anthony Oughtred. They had five children: Henry, Frances, Catherine, Edward, and Thomas.
He died on 4 Jul 1551 on the Sweating Sickness* (like his mother and sisters) at Launde Abbey, Leicester, where he lived with his family. He is also buried there.
He was succeeded by his eldest son Henry. Henry's grandson, Thomas, 4th Baron Cromwell, was created Earl of Ardglass in the Irish peerage 15 April 1645. The earldom of Ardglass expired in 1687, and the barony of Cromwell became dormant in 1709.
*What an irony of history! He died in the same month like his father and was taken away by the Sweating Sickness which he had survived years ago.
